How far can I talk?
The operating range of any radio system depends on terrain, power, antenna efficiency and many other factors. Actual performance will vary depending on local conditions, but it is possible to generally predict range under average conditions in an urban area.

What about using radios in an extended area?
In order to communicate in a wider area than can be reached from radio-to-radio you need to consider repeaters, towers, and/or wide area networks such as voice over (IP).

How long will the battery last?
Daily battery life depends on the capacity of the battery. Battery life is usually rated on an 10% transmit, 10% receive, and 80% standby. Most standard batteries will provide an 8-hour day before needing to be recharged. High capacity batteries typically provide 12-15 hours of use. These times will vary based on amount of transmit time, scan settings, age of battery.
Batteries are warrantied for 1 year and will usually last 2-3 years before needing to be replaced.

Are my conversations private?
No, analog radio transmissions can be scanned. However, only someone within the operating range of your radio could hear any transmissions. If you need private conversation, consider a digital two-way radios or scrambling technologies.

Should I use a handheld or mobile?
The answer to this question will vary upon your needs and intended use. Compare the options using the table below.

How should I charge my portable radio?
If your portable radio batteries are charged correctly, the units will provide a longer period of operation. Additionally, the life of the battery will be increased. It is always best to turn off the radio prior to charging.  Wenever possible, drain the battery prior to charge. You should never transmit when the portable is in the charger. The battery should always charge for a full cycle, typically meaning a normal charge time of 10 hours for standard charger and one hour for rapid chargers. Never leave the battery in a charger for extended periods.

What is the difference in Ni-Cad, NiMh, and Li-Ion batteries?
Ni-Cad or Nickel Cadmium batteries are the most common battery used to power two-way radios. They may develop a memory if not cycled properly. NiMh and LiIo batteries offer longer daily battery life in a smaller package than Ni-Cads and will not develop a memory.

What is the difference between VHF and UHF?
Due to the characteristics of radio waves, UHF radios generally offer better building penetration and therefore are ideally suited for indoors as well as for areas of high building density (cities). VHF radios are better suited for areas where there is vegetation, where the signal can pass through objects. For this reason VHF radios are ideal for outdoor use. Where the application requires a combination of indoor and outdoor use, a UHF radio is typcially preferable.
